Emily Dickinson’s The Gorgeous Nothings

envelope, in poetry, a device in which a line or a stanza is repeated so as to enclose a section of verse, as in Sir Thomas Wyatt’s “Is it Possible?” For Emily Dickinson it was the perfect box zu write inside the box and give her poetry a vessel and an grip:
The Gorgeous Nothings. 

Written on flattened envelopes and scraps of paper, the effect of Emily Dickinson’s “envelope poems” depends as much on visual shape as on words. This puzzle explores the unique difficulties of reading the envelope poems, asking solvers to engage with the materiality of Dickinson’s poetry as well as the intricate linkages imagined by her language.
